Questions parents ask
Why should my autistic child learn more and less before counting?
'More' and 'less' are how humans actually use numbers all day — more rice, less sugar, more coins, less time. A child who can pick the bigger pile understands quantity in a way pure counting cannot teach. This is the real gateway to addition, subtraction and money.
What can we use for the two piles?
Anything safe and small that you already have — chana, rajma, buttons, bindis, coins, blocks. Same object in both piles, different quantities. Household items work better than fancy toys because your child sees them daily.
How different should the two piles be at first?
Very different — 2 versus 10, not 4 versus 5. Obvious differences build the concept faster. Only after your child chooses correctly every time should you make the piles closer in size.
