What are functional academic skills for autistic children?

Functional academic skills are the reading, writing, maths, and life skills that matter in real daily life — not just in school. For autistic children, these include recognizing safety signs, handling money, writing their name, making phone calls, and using transport safely. These skills build independence, regardless of a child's school academic level.

How do I assess my autistic child's learning skills at home?

Observe what your child actually does in real situations — not what they do in structured practice. MirchiColor's assessment asks parents to observe across four domains: reading, writing, numbers and money, and real life skills. Each question has three responses: Yes, confidently; Sometimes; and Not yet — because in autism, skills are often inconsistent.

Why does my autistic child learn differently from other children?

Autistic children often have uneven learning profiles — they may excel in some areas while finding others very difficult. This is not a measure of intelligence. Many autistic children learn better through visual supports, repetition, and real-life context rather than abstract classroom instruction. Start with what motivates your child — words related to their favourite things. Add labels around the home (kitchen, bathroom). Use real-life reading opportunities like safety signs, food packaging, and simple instructions. Consistent, low-pressure daily exposure works better than formal reading sessions for most autistic children.
