Two cards. One moment at a time. Helps your child move through transitions with less resistance.
A First-Then board is the simplest visual support tool in autism caregiving. Two cards. FIRST shows what needs to happen now. THEN shows what comes after — the reward, the preferred activity, the thing the child is waiting for. Nothing more. Nothing less.
It works because autistic children often resist non-preferred activities not out of defiance, but because they cannot see what comes next. A First-Then board makes the future visible — and visible futures feel safe.
Choose the FIRST activity — the task your child needs to do. Keep it short and achievable to start.
Choose the THEN activity — something your child genuinely loves. The more motivating, the better.
Show the board before the activity begins — not during a meltdown. Point to each card: "First bath, then TV time."
When the child resists, point to the THEN card — not to the child. Let the board do the talking.
