How do I teach my autistic child to recognise safety signs?
Introduce ONE sign at a time — not the whole set. Start with STOP, because it appears everywhere. Show the card at home for a week, then spot the same sign together outside — on the road, at the mall, in a lift. Recognition becomes real only when the card and the real world match.
Which sign should I start with?
STOP first — it is the highest-value safety word your child can learn, and you will see it every day on the road. TOILET is a strong second, because it means your child can locate a bathroom in any public place. Add DANGER, EXIT and LIFT one at a time after that.
My child reads the word but doesn't act on the sign — what now?
Recognition and action are two separate skills. Practise the action in a safe setting — say 'STOP' at home while walking and physically stop together. Repeat this pairing in the park, then near a real road with your hand held. Action follows recognition, but only through repetition in real places.
