Why do favourite words work better for my autistic child?
Motivation is the fastest path to reading. When the word on the sheet is 'PIZZA' or 'BLUEY' — something your child already loves — recognition is instant and joyful. Standard word lists teach reading as a chore; favourite words teach it as a reward.
How many favourite words should I put on one sheet?
Between 5 and 8 is the sweet spot. Fewer feels bare; more overwhelms the page. If you have more favourites, make two sheets — one for foods, one for shows, and so on.
My child already knows these words verbally. Is reading them different?
Yes — hearing a word and recognising its written shape are different skills. But knowing the word verbally is a huge head start. Your child already knows what the word means; now they only need to link the meaning to the shape on the page.
